Neil has worked in medical publishing for the past 20 years at companies such as John Wiley & Sons, Springer Science & Business Media and Informa Healthcare. He is currently publishing manager for the Pharma Solutions division at Nature Publishing Group (NPG), where he works with pharmaceutical and medical communications companies, journal editors and researchers to publish clinical studies in NPG journals. An active member of ISMPP, he currently serves on its ISMPP U committee, and has also been a workshop faculty member at the European and Annual meetings.  Neil received his B.A. from Bates College and is an ISMPP Certified Medical Publication Professional.

Gregory Bezkorovainy is Vice President of Scientific Services at Adelphi Communications in New York. He entered the healthcare communications field in 1988, just as strategic publications planning was taking root in the pharmaceutical industry. Over the years he has worn almost every publications planning hat imaginable, including medical reporter, editor, writer, designer, tactical planner, and strategic planner. Gregory joined Adelphi, Inc in 2002 and has been in his current position since 2006. This is Gregory's sixth consecutive year as faculty for Introduction to Publications Planning.

Barbara E. Bierer, MD
Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Barbara E. Bierer, M.D., a hematologist-oncologist, is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Dr. Bierer co-founded and now leads, as faculty co-director, the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials (MRCT) Center at Harvard, a University-wide and collaborative effort to improve standards for the planning and conduct of clinical trials in the developing world. In addition, she is the Program Director of the Regulatory Foundations, Law and Ethics Program of the Harvard Catalyst, the Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Award. From 2003-2014, she served as Senior Vice President, Research, at the BWH and was the institutional official for human subjects and animal research, for biosafety and for research integrity. She initiated the Brigham Research Institute and the Innovation Hub (iHub), a focus for entrepreneurship and innovation. In addition, she was the Co-Chair of the Partners HealthCare Committee on Conflict of Interest. Dr. Bierer established and directed the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity at the BWH; for these efforts, she was the first recipient of the HMS Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award in 2008.

In addition to her academic responsibilities, Dr. Bierer served on the Board of Directors of both the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). She served as the Chair of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee for Human Research Protections, Department of Health and Human Services from 2008-2012. She is currently a member of the National Academies of Sciences Committee on Science, Technology and the Law. She also serves on the Board of Directors of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R), dedicated to promoting the ethical conduct of biomedical and behavioral research; Management Sciences for Health (MSH), an international organization working in partnership globally to strengthen health care, local capability, and access; and the Edward P Evans Foundation, a foundation supporting biomedical research for which she serves as Chair. She has authored or co-authored over 180 publications and is on the editorial boards of a number of journals including Current Protocols of Immunology.

Dr. Bierer received a B.S. from Yale University and an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.

Dan Bridges, PhD, ISMPP CMPP™
Regional Director, Europe & China, Nucleus Global

Dan is currently the Regional Director for Europe and China at Nucleus Global, where he is responsible for the 7 medical communication agencies (Articulate Science, Cognito Medical, Health Interactions, Medical Expressions, Meditech Media, Meditech Media China  & Scimentum) that support clients across these regions and globally. In his 13 years in medical communications, Dan has specialised in building integrated publication planning offerings in both the clinical and HEOR fields and has led global and affiliate publication plans across multiple therapeutic areas and all stages of the product lifecycle. He has also provided extensive consultancy support to clients in the development of publication SOPs and integration of best practice guidelines. He currently serves on the ISMPP Board of Trustees and was an author on both GPP2 and GPP3. Prior to his medical communications career, Dan gained an MSC in Biochemistry from the University of Bath, UK and a PhD on the clinical use of cannabinoids for neuropathic pain from Imperial College London, UK (in collaboration with Novartis).

Global Medical Director, Caudex

Gary has 13 years of medical communications and scientific publishing experience. He joined McCann Complete Medical in 2006, and is now SVP, Global Medical Director for Caudex, based in their New York office. Gary has led communication planning and publication planning activities in several therapy areas and has collaborated with teams in many European and US pharmaceutical companies, including Bayer Schering, Roche, Lundbeck, Novartis, Novo Nordisk, Boehringer Ingelheim, GSK, AstraZeneca, BMS, Merck Serono, EMD Serono, Pfizer, and, more recently, Japanese pharmaceutical companies Chugai and Mitsubishi Tanabe. Prior to his medical communications career he gained valuable editorial experience in journal publishing with Portland Press. Gary obtained his PhD from the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology, London working on a monoclonal antibody therapy for systemic lupus erythematosus.

Todd Carpenter

Todd Carpenter is Executive Director of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), a US-based non-profit industry trade association that fosters the development and maintenance of standards that facilitate the creation, persistent management, discovery, and effective interchange of information in publishing and media. Throughout his career, Todd has served in a variety of roles with organizations that connected the publisher, library and software communities. Prior to joining NISO, Todd had been Director of Business Development with BioOne. He has held management positions at The Johns Hopkins University Press, the Energy Intelligence Group, and the Haworth Press. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a masters in business from the Johns Hopkins Univeristy. Todd is also editor of The Critical Component: Standards in Information Distribution published by the American Library Association.

Dheepa Chari, MS
Director, Scientific Communications, US Oncology, Novartis

Dheepa Chari has 15 years of experience in the pharmaceutical/biotech industry in various roles creating and executing strategic data communication plans, medical expert engagement plans, and clinical research activities. She currently works at Novartis Pharmaceuticals as Director of US Oncology Scientific Communications, focusing on medical strategy development, publication planning, and scientific resource development for the rare disease and renal cell carcinoma franchises. Previously, she worked on Amgen’s Medical Communications team for over 4 years, where she led publication planning activities on the rheumatology and dermatology programs and pipeline products. In addition to her publications experience, she worked in study management and data management roles for several years at both Amgen and Pfizer across various therapeutic areas, including supportive care oncology, CV/metabolic, and neuroscience.

Dheepa holds a Master of Science degree in Biostatistics from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from Southern Methodist University. She is currently a member of ISMPP and TIPPA.

Christopher Carswell, MSc

Chris Carswell has been the Editor in Chief of PharmacoEconomics for over ten years, is the co-editor of The Patient: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research and the consulting editor of Applied Health Economics and Health Policy. He also leads a team of six other professional journal editors in the fields of pharmacoeconomics, pharmacovigilance and pharmacokinetics.. He practised as a pharmacist for over 10 years before becoming a medical writer and then a full-time professional journal editor with Adis publications in 2001.

Chris was a lead author on the CHEERs reporting guidelines for economic evaluations and is also an author on GPP-3 taking the lead on the guidelines for authorship and author payment sections.

Alice Choi, PhD, ISMPP CMPP™

Alice Choi is currently the Global Head of Complete Medical Communications (CMC), a division of McCann Complete Medical.  Alice has an honours degree in Pharmacology, a Masters Degree in Clinical Pharmacology, a Masters in Public Health and a doctorate in cancer epidemiology.  Pre CMC, Alice began her career in academia as a researcher before moving on to a number of healthcare agencies, working in medical communications, market research and health outcomes.  

Since joining CMC in 2002, Alice has held a number of different roles, including account director and commercial director, before taking up her current position in 2006.  In this role, she oversees a multidisciplinary team based in offices across the UK and the US.  Alongside her broader operational responsibilities, Alice continues to work closely with several clients.  Having 20 years of experience in a range of different therapy areas, she assists clients with a variety of projects including communication planning, Phase IIIB/IV planning, stakeholder services and general consultancy – in particular, publication planning and best practice scientific exchange are important areas for Alice and the wider CMC team.  Alice is a Certified Medical Publication Professional and has served on several ISMPP committees over the years.  She is currently the Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Trustees for ISMPP and the Chair of the 2016 Annual Program Committee.  She also serves as a Governor for The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, one of Europe’s leading cancer centres.

Juli Clark, PharmD

Juli has directed the Global Medical Writing department at Amgen for 9 years, and has 19 years of experience in the biotech industry, having managed staff and services in Medical Writing, Medical Information and Medical Communication roles.  Prior to working in industry, she worked for two smaller companies (Pathogenesis, and Otsuka). Juli earned her B.S. Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees at University of Iowa, and completed a General Hospital Pharmacy Residency program and Fellowship in Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy.  Prior to entering the biotech/pharma industry, Juli practiced as a clinical pharmacy specialist in a variety of settings including managed care, Indian Health Service, private and large University Hospitals.  Juli is currently serving Vice Chair of the 12th Annual Meeting of ISMPP and has been an active participant/presenter in the Medical Publishing Insights and Practices Initiative (MPIP) as well as with ISMPP, AMWA and DIA.

Dr. Jocalyn Clark is a professional journal editor based in London UK. She was appointed Executive Editor at The Lancet in March 2016.  From 2013-16 she served as Executive Editor at icddr,b, a large public health research organisation in Dhaka, Bangladesh and the Journal of Health, Population, and Nutrition (JHPN) until it was acquired by BioMed Central in June 2015.  Previously Jocalyn was Senior Editor at PLOS Medicine (2008-13) and an Assistant Editor at The BMJ (2002-07). She is also an adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto. In 2013, Jocalyn was a fellow of the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center for her writing project on “the medicalization of global health.”

Tim has worked in global medical communications for 20 years, in roles in the UK, USA and Canada. His background includes medical editing and writing positions, in-house (global brand team) support for a leading pharma company, and Editorial Director and Operations Director roles within the Fishawack Group. In 2014, Tim established the Fishawack Group’s US West Coast operation in San Francisco. Tim is a Certified Medical Publication Professional, a member of the ISMPP Certification Board (Voting Director, 2015-2017), and Co-Chair of the ISMPP Asia Pacific Education Taskforce. He has led workshops at ISMPP annual meetings, and has been a presenter at the past two International Publication Planning Association (TIPPA) annual meetings. Tim has many years of experience in publication planning, journal and congress publications, advisory boards, symposia and educational material. He currently provides client service, editorial direction and technical leadership for a range of products and services in variety of therapeutic areas. He has an honors degree in Physiology/Pharmacology with Health Studies, and research experience at the Justus Liebig University Hospital, Giessen, Germany.

Nicholas Combates, PhD, ISMPP CMPP™

Nick is an Associate Director in Global Scientific Communications at Celgene supporting Multiple Myeloma. He earned his PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Rutgers University. While a post-doctoral scientist at Novartis and J&J he conducted preclinical research in oncology and dermatology. He is an author on over a dozen peer-reviewed publications. Nick has over 15 years experience in strategic publication planning and development. He started as a medical writer and then became a medical director at a Medical Communications Agency working with several major pharmaceutical companies. Nick then joined Aventis (later Sanofi) and led publications development in respiratory and oncology. Nick is a Certified Medical Publication Professional and has been an ISMPP member since its inception.

As leader of the Adelphi NY office, Grahame brings more than 25 years’ experience in blue chip Pharma companies – starting as a Medical Representative and rising through strategic brand director roles (national and global) to the position of Director of Global Marketing and executive board member. In addition, he has experience in pharmacy retailing and corporate finance as Corporate Development Manager at The Boots Company in the UK. Grahame’s agency experience has centered on strategic communications, publications planning, and digital innovation. When not working: Grahame lives in Brooklyn where he and his wife both enjoy the increasing rivalry between Brooklyn and Manhattan restaurants and food scene. He is a board member of the neighborhood arts group (PLGarts.org) and a keen photographer.

Morgan deBlecourt is an editor and publications manager at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, the largest academic research organization in the world, which is located in Durham, North Carolina. Morgan came to the DCRI, part of the Duke University School of Medicine, in 2010. Morgan received her undergraduate degree in journalism at Marshall University in her home state of West Virginia. In addition to volunteering at their church, Morgan and her husband David spend most of their spare time with their son, Elliot.

Jonathan Druhan, PhD

Jon Druhan is Director of US Publications at AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP. His background includes a BSc from McGill University, MA and PhD degrees in Biopsychology from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and more than 35 years of scientific communications work in both academic and industry settings. Earlier in his career, Jon held successive tenure-track faculty positions in Psychiatry Departments at MCP-Hahnemann University and the University of Pennsylvania.  Jon subsequently went on to pursue opportunities in the Medical Communications field, initially working as a medical writer at Trinity Communications and Scientific Connexions, and then working as Assistant/Associate Director of Publications at Johnson & Johnson.  He joined AstraZeneca in 2006, and managed their US-based publications professionals for over 5 years. During this time, Jon served as Chair of the Ethics Committee for the International Society for Medical Publications Professionals (ISMPP) and he frequently presented on issues related to publications ethics and best practices at ISMPP meetings and Center for Business Intelligence forums on Publication Planning. In 2011, he took on the role of Medical Scientific Compliance Director, providing policy and compliance support to AstraZeneca’s US Medical Affairs department. During his three years as Compliance Director, Jon developed broad expertise in policy and regulatory issues related to scientific exchange and medical communications. He recently returned to the field of Medical Publications in October 2014 and has since been serving as Publications Director for the Publications Group within US Medical Affairs at AstraZeneca.

Marion Enie, ISMPP CMPP™
Divisional Lead, Envision Pharma Group

Marion has been with Envision since 2006 assuming increasing responsibilities and leading teams across multiple accounts and therapeutic areas. Marion co-leads Consulting Solutions where she leverages her broad expertise specializing in evidence-based strategic communication planning including therapeutic landscape, needs assessment and scientific platform development throughout all stages of the product lifecycle. Marion began her career with as clinical medical technologist with a specialty in hematology. She left the clinical world to take a position with Boehringer Mannheim Diagnostics (now Roche) in the development and marketing of medical devices.  Through an interest in product development, Marion accepted an appointment at Indiana University as Manager of Technology Transfer where she collaborated between the University and industry to help commercialize the University’s intellectual property.  Marion then returned to industry spending 7 years at Eli Lilly and Company, where she supported the launch of multiple products in diabetes and CNS.  She was also part of a task force that initiated scientific data disclosure strategy in order to improve and standardize policies and processes to support the communication of scientific data. Marion is active in the International Society of Medical Publications Professionals (ISMPP) and has served on the Annual Meeting Workshop Committee from 2009-2011. She also holds the Certified Medical Publications Professionals (CMPP) certification. Marion received her BS degree in Biology from California State University, California, PA and a Certificate in Industrial Chemistry and Business Management from Chatham College, Pittsburgh, PA.

Keith Evans, PhD

Keith Evans holds qualifications in Economics (BA Econ) and Health Economics (PhD) from Leicester University. He worked as a lecturer in economics at Leicester Polytechnic/De Montfort University for five years. Keith then worked as Health Economist and later Director of Health Services Research Unit (UCNW Bangor) and has also worked for Ayrshire & Arran Health Board (UK NHS) as health economist in the department of Public Health. Keith has worked in medical communications agencies for the past ten years specializing in health outcomes and evidence-based medicine projects. His current role is to provide specialist health outcomes input into InScience Communication medical communication services.

Sarah Feeny, BMedSc, ISMPP CMPP™
Head of Scientific Direction,
Complete Medical Communication

Sarah L Feeny is Global Head of Scientific Direction at Complete Medical Communications, head-quartered in the UK. Sarah studied medicine at the University of Nottingham Medical School in the UK, but deciding she would make a very poor healthcare professional, she changed track and became a biomedical writer/indexer in 1993. She moved to Complete Medical Communications in 1998 and has extensive experience in the field of ethical publication planning and delivery. She has also assisted in the development of industry publication planning SOPs and policy documents, as well as running industry training on good publication practice. Sarah is a charter member of ISMPP, past Chair of the European Committee of ISMPP (2008-2011) and held the European At-Large position on the ISMPP Board of Trustees (2011-2014). Janet Forrester
Associate Professor, Dept. of Public Health & Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine

Janet Forrester holds a PhD from McGill University in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She currently holds a position as an Associate Professor in the Department of Public Health & Community Medicine at the Tufts University School of Medicine. She is the Associate Director of the Tufts University Doctorate in Public Health degree and Course Director for Epidemiology and Biostatistics (Health Communications 502). Over that past 20 years, she has conducted epidemiologic studies, including randomized trials, in the area of infectious diseases and nutrition. She is a consulting statistical editor for the journal Clinical Therapeutics.

Meg Franklin, PharmD, PhD
President, Franklin Pharmaceutical Consulting, LLC

Meg has over 10 years of experience in the health economics and outcomes research arena. She has consulted for pharmaceutical consulting companies, and spent several years in academia as an Associate Professor at the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy in South Carolina. Over the last decade she has written numerous scientific publications, conducted retrospective database studies, developed economic models, drafted value messages, and provided strategic consulting to pharmaceutical companies. Her primary expertise is in research design and methodology, particularly retrospective analyses. She holds a PharmD and PhD from the University of South Carolina. Dr. Franklin has worked across a myriad of therapeutic areas. Recent areas of focus include the following: oncology (pancreatic, lung, and breast cancers, multiple myeloma, melanoma, and chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting), hepatitis, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, hemophilia, and rheumatoid arthritis. She also has experience working with rare/orphan diseases. Prior to entering the HEOR arena, she completed an ASHP accredited pharmacy practice residency and worked as a clinical pharmacist.

Jeff has worked in scientific publishing and communications for more than 15 years, including a focus in market access and evidence-based medicine since his time at Sanofi. Jeff specializes in the content and operational aspects of investigating, communicating and translating the value of health technology to its stakeholders. Jeff started his own consulting firm, Integrative Life Sciences, in 2015 to continue to work across healthcare stakeholders with special attention on these and related areas.

Christine Gatchalian, PhD

Christine Gatchalian PhD, Director, leads the Oncology and Hematology/Oncology teams in Global Medical Writing.  Christine has accumulated 21 years of experience in the biopharmaceutical industry, the last 8 of which have been in scientific publications.  She joined Amgen Global Medical Writing in 2004, briefly supporting pipeline product teams in Oncology before assuming the role of Bone therapeutic area lead.  In this capacity, Christine developed teams of medical writers supporting all indications for denosumab and a pipeline product.  Prior to 2004, Christine led a team of medical writers and a graphics specialist at Kendle International, which provided dedicated publication support on Amgen products.  Christine received her PhD in Neural Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis.

Seth J. Goldenberg, PhD
Director, Product Development Strategy, NAMSA

Seth J. Goldenberg is currently the Director of Product Development Strategy with NAMSA, previously the Director of Global Regulatory at NAMSA, and a former member of the U.S. FDA. He holds a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Washington and a M.S. from the School of Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University. At NAMSA Dr. Goldenberg works with over 750 NAMSA associates to develop global strategies for success taking into account regulatory, clinical, testing and business considerations around the world. He has supported companies in direct interactions with the US FDA, several notified bodies, CFDA, ANVISA, MFDS, and many others global regulatory bodies.  Prior to joining NAMSA Dr. Goldenberg founded a consulting company based in Shanghai supporting medical device market entry. Dr. Goldenberg understands not only what it takes to carry out scientific study, but also the importance of communicating it with the global scientific community to foster partnerships and collaboration, demonstrated by his strong publication record in such journals as Cell, Science, and Nature Cell Biology that have been cited over 900 times.

Lynn Gordon, MPH, ISMPP CMPP™
Director, Medical Affairs, Theravance

Lynne has a wealth of experience with over 20 years in the pharmaceutical industry working in both large pharma and start-up biotech companies. She was a field-based Medical Science Liaison (MSL) for 15 years in a number of therapeutic areas: Infectious diseases, gastroenterology, pulmonology, allergy, otolaryngology and oncology. For the past 5 years, Lynne has been in-house at Theravance Biopharma US, Inc. She was the third person in the Medical Affairs Department, which has grown to twenty, including the field based team.
Her primary responsibility is the Program Lead for Telavancin (VIBATIV®) publications. In this role, she spear-headed a cross-functional team that developed the Company’s first ever publication policy, which was revised last year. Lynne trained all potential internal authors on both the initial publication policy, and last year on the updated company policy; totaling about 200 people. On a daily basis, she manages the VIBATIV medical communication vendor and assists with any company publication issues, including, but not limited to VIBATIV publications. Lynne’s other roles at Theravance Biopharma include: Operation Lead for Investigator-Initiated Research projects (IIRs), coordinating HEOR projects and departmental SOP-policy training lead.

Jim Gurr, PhD, has over 15 years experince in publications in the pharmaceutical industry and is currently a Publications Lead, Oncology, in the Scientific Publications group at MedImmune. Prior to joining MedImmune, Jim held similar positions in the publications teams at Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer and Wyeth. He has been a member of ISMPP since its inception and has served on the Annual Meeting Committee for the past 6 years.He is also an author on GPP2 and GPP3.

Zachary Hallinan

Zachary Hallinan is the Director of Patient Communication and Engagement Programs at the non-profit Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP). A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, he oversees CISCRP's programs for better understanding and meeting the needs of clinical research volunteers globally, including programs to assist research sponsors in communicating clinical trial results to study volunteers in plain language. He has been recognized for his work and scholarship by the National Science Foundation, and was recognized by CenterWatch as one of twenty innovators changing the face of the clinical trials industry.

Mieko has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry. After studying business management in UK, where she obtained a post-graduate diploma from Westminster University, she started her career in the pharmaceutical industry. While at Pharmacia in Japan, she was engaged in various, but essential, aspects for pharmaceutical companies including: R&D resource planning, clinical development, portfolio management, HEOR, new product assessment and portfolio management, and product marketing. In 2003, she moved to Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical Company Ltd and worked in US for their Global function. In 2005, Yamanouchi became Astellas Pharma Inc. and further enhanced its globalization strategy. Mieko spent most of her career managing a global team to develop VESIcare which became a leading product worldwide to treat overactive bladder. She was responsible for establishing and implementing the global brand strategy while leading a cross-regional and cross-functional global team. Various studies were conducted according to the product life cycle; throughout this period, she engaged with authors and publication teams to help ensure manuscripts from these studies were submitted to peer-reviewed journals. In 2012, she moved to Medical Affairs function which was newly created at that time and fully dedicated for the company to be compliant with good publication practice. Carolyn has been with Merck since 2001, first as a medical writer, quickly progressing to become the group leader for the bone, respiratory, immunology and dermatology writing group. In 2010, she became the Director of the Publication Services group within the Global Scientific and Medical Publications Department, progressed to Executive Director in 2013, and assumed leadership of the department this year. She has a BS in Chemistry/Marine Science from the University of Miami and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California. She completed her CMPP certification in 2014.

Renu Juneja, PhD

Renu Juneja is Head of the Medical Communications group at MedImmune (the worldwide biologics research and development arm of AstraZeneca). Her group has the responsibility for writing regulatory documents (clinical trial reports, summary documents, protocols, investigator brochures, briefing documents etc.) as well as publications (manuscripts, review articles .); for peer-reviewed journals and presentations (abstracts, posters, oral presentations etc) at the scientific meetings. Previously, she led the Strategic Scientific Communication (SSC) group at Novo Nordisk Inc. (NNI). She also had the opportunity to lead the Information & Education group at NNI and was responsible for the company’s library and for Independent Medical Education (IMEs) programs. Renu started her career in Novo Nordisk as a medical writer. After finishing her PhD in Reproductive Biology & Biochemistry from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER) in India, Renu joined The Population Council in NY as a Postdoctoral fellow. Two years later, she received an independent research grant from the Lalor Foundation and joined the department of Molecular Biology at the Princeton University, She has over 20 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has presented at various national and international conferences. Renu has presented and conducted workshops at the annual meetings of various professional organizations e.g. ISMPP, TIPPA, CBI, and Q1 productions.

Vincent Lima

Vincent Lima, a senior assessment specialist at Professional Testing, Inc., has worked closely with the ISMPP Credentialing Board on the CMPP exam since 2010. At Professional Testing, he provides consulting, training, meeting facilitation, and analytical reporting to help credentialing agencies place new programs on a firm footing and continuously improve existing programs. Working previously at the Educational Testing Service, Mr. Lima wrote and reviewed questions for the Analytical sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Verbal sections of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Later, at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Mr. Lima was instrumental in developing the process for efficiently creating, reviewing, pretesting, and scoring realistic simulations of the work CPAs perform regularly. Mr. Lima is a member of the National Council on Measurement in Education and participates regularly in meetings of the Association of Test Publishers. Outside the testing industry, he has served as editor-in-chief of the weekly Armenian Reporter and as editor of a quarterly journal. He has taught at Tufts University and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

Karen has over 18 years of experience in clinical trial publication planning and development. She currently serves on the Standards Committee of the International Society of Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP). Karen received a BSc from Penn State University, a Masters degree in Exercise Physiology from San Diego State University, and a PhD in Environmental Physiology from Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada. She was a National Research Council Resident Research Associate with the Diving Medicine Department, Naval Medical Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, and was a postdoctoral fellow in renal physiology at Rutgers University. Paul O’Grady has worked in the medical communications sector for over 14 years, holding positions within both agencies and pharmaceutical companies. Paul received a doctoral degree in biochemistry from the University of Southampton, UK, and a bachelor's degree from King’s College, London.

After obtaining his PhD, Paul relocated to the US, where he conducted post-doctoral research at the University of Rochester. He eventually moved to New Jersey, where he began working as a medical writer/director. Following work as a publication manager at Aventis/sanofi-aventis, he subsequently moved to Schering-Plough where he eventually assumed the role of Director of Global Publications in Global Medical Affairs. In this position, Paul was responsible for overseeing publications across the company, the product literature database, and production of US managed care dossiers. In 2009, he transitioned to the Global Scientific Communications group in Novartis Oncology, first as Director for New Products, subsequently becoming Senior Director overseeing a group which focused on the publications and medical education for everolimus (Afinitor), and across the company’s renal cell cancer and Breast Cancer portfolio. Recently, he has moved to overseeing digital solutions for GMA Oncology at the company working across all medical functions.

He has been active in ISMPP for the last few years - co-running the Joy of Gap Analysis workshop of the ISMPP Annual Meeting for 4 years and serving on 2013, 2014 and 2015 Annual Meeting Program Committees.

Prior to joining BMS, she led a team of scientists and publications professionals to deliver high-quality, scientifically rigorous, publication plans for the entire AstraZeneca portfolio of compounds/drugs. Before joining AstraZeneca, she held positions in publications at UCB and Abbott Labboratories where her responsibilities ranged from leading publication plans to process improvements and training, including development of corporate publication policy and streamlining publication practices. Heather Pierce is Senior Director for Science Policy and Regulatory Counsel at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). She serves as AAMC’s staff leader for scientific regulatory issues including clinical research, conflicts of interest, evidence-based regulation, and collaborations between industry, government, and academia in biomedical research. She is also the program leader for the AAMC’s Forum on Conflict of Interest in Academe and the co-director of Convey, the AAMC’s global financial interest disclosure system.
Ms. Pierce is a member of the Board of Directors of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) and regularly speaks at national forums on issues related to the protection of human subjects, conflicts of interest, scientific misconduct, and the regulation of research. She has served on ad hoc committees and task forces convened by organizations including the Institute of Medicine, The Pew Charitable Trusts, the National Dialogue on Healthcare Innovation, and PRIM&R. Prior to joining AAMC, Ms. Pierce was an attorney in the Health Care Group of the law firm of Ropes & Gray LLP in New York. Her regulatory practice focused on medical research and clinical care. She received her law degree from New York University and her MPH in Health Law from Boston University.

Kenneth Pomerantz, PhD

Dr. Pomerantz has extensive experience in both Academic Research and Scientific/Medical Communications within the Pharmaceutical Industry.

After earning a PhD in Physiology from Georgetown University, he pursued post-doctoral training at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He later held the rank as Assistant Professor at Cornell University Medical College, in the Department of Hematology/Oncology, where he furthered NIH and AHA-funded research efforts in vascular cell biology, pathology, and molecular biology. Over his academic career, he published 40 scientific publications.

From 1996 to 2005, Dr. Pomerantz led domestic strategic publication planning for the Cardiovascular, Metabolic, Oncology and Hematology Portfolios, and global scientific publication planning to support the Men's Health portfolio at the Bayer Corporation.

From 2005 to 2012, Dr. Pomerantz served GlaxoSmithKline as Director, Scientific Communication Strategy, and "Medical Communications Quality & Practices". He was responsible for Global Key External Expert and Scientific Communications initiatives in the Cardiovascular/Metabolic and Oncology therapeutic areas.

Dr. Pomerantz joined Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. in 2012 to lead the Medical Publications Group. As Director of this Group, he provides strategic and tactical direction for the Medical Publication function within the Department of Clinical Development and Medical Affairs, and in support of US and Global stakeholders.

Prior to Baxter, Carol spent 2 years as Director of Scientific Content at Vision2Voice, a small marketing communications agency based in Deerfield, IL. She also worked for 4 years as a Global Publications Manager, commuting weekly to AstraZeneca in Wilmington, Delaware, where she managed publications and symposia for diabetes and cardiovascular products. From 2000 to 2008, Carol worked for Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America in Deerfield, IL, where she held various positions from Senior Medical Writer to Manager of Strategic Publications, development compounds, gastroenterology and cardiovascular science, and managed publication plans in the therapy areas of sleep, oncology, sepsis, endometriosis, gastroenterology and lipid-lowering. Before joining Takeda, Carol spent 8 years as Managing Medical Editor with Discovery International, a medical communications company then located in Deerfield. While at DI, she developed publication strategies and plans, promotional and CME materials, publications and presentations for pharmaceutical company clients. For 3 years, Carol was Managing Medical Editor at Publications International, publishers of Consumer Guide®, where she developed consumer-targeted books and magazines on topics including family health, fitness, exercise, diet and prescription drugs. Anita Schmid, PhD, associate director of scientific communications for solid tumors, Celgene, is responsible for the Abraxane development program’s publication plan and execution for gastrointestinal diseases. Anita originally joined Abraxis BioScience in 2008 as a medical writer, which was later acquired by Celgene, and at that time she was responsible for the development of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations for Abraxane in breast cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, and melanoma. Prior to Abraxis BioScience, Anita worked for Allergan and Kendle International. Anita was trained as a neuroscientist at the University of Southern California, her research investigated the neural circuits for reinforcing behavior, and in the last 10 years she has been working in the medical communications profession for the pharmaceutical industry.

Catherine Skobe, MPH, MT (ASCP)

Catherine Skobe has been a Director on the Publications Management Team at Pfizer since 2007. Prior to Pfizer, she worked on medical publications at IntraMed, a division of Sudler & Hennessey. Catherine also worked at Becton Dickinson in clinical research and at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in the clinical chemistry laboratory. Catherine has served on the ISMPP Ethics Committee since 2011. She has been a faculty member on several ISMPP workshops. She has presented at TIPPA, DIA, and other meetings. Her current areas of interest beyond medical publication ethics are in enhanced publications and exploring social media via alternative metrics as it relates to medical publications. Richard Smith, PhD
Former editor, BMJ

Richard Smith worked at the British Medical Journal for 25 years, and for 13 of those years—from 1991 to 2004—he was the editor in chief of the BMJ and chief executive of the BMJ Publishing Group. The winner of three awards for journalism, he has written for dozens of journals in addition to the BMJ and has written widely for the lay press. Richard also worked as a television doctor for six years, four of them for the BBC, and he has made several television programmes. Richard was a member of the board of the Public Library of Science, which aims to make all research open access, and the editor of Cases Journal (a journal that aimed to publish tens of thousands of case reports a year and gather them in a database) and is chair of the Cochrane Library Oversight Committee and was a member of the UK Panel on Research Integrity. He now blogs regularly for the BMJ. His book, “The Trouble with Medical Journals,” summarises what he learnt in his years as an editor. He is also working with F1000, which has a new way to publish science controlled by scientists rather than editors. Currently Richard is chair of the board of trustees of icddr,b [formerly International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh], which is one of the largest health research institutions in a low income country. An honorary professor at Imperial College London and the University of Warwick, Richard is also chair of the board of Patients Know Best (a start up that uses information technology to improve doctor patient partnership). Having qualified in medicine in Edinburgh, he began his career working in hospitals in Scotland and New Zealand. In 1989-90 he gained a degree in management science from the Stanford Business School in California. Made a Commander of the British Empire in 2000, he comes from a family of comedians and loves making soup, porridge, marmalade, and trouble.

Chuck Stevens, JD, MBA

Charles (Chuck) Stevens has over 20 years of bio-pharma industry experience, including responsibility for strategic reimbursement, pricing, public and private payer strategy, product distribution/channel management, and pharmacoeconomics for both commercialized and non-commercialized products. At PAREXEL, Chuck is responsible for leading the Reimbursement & Market Access (RMA) practice, including management of all reimbursement, market access, tactical reimbursement support helplines and PAP’s (Patient Assistance Programs), designed to provide workable solutions to support commercial success and patient access to therapy.  He has specialized expertise in hematology, oncology, HIV/AIDS, addiction medicine, gastroenterology and urology.

Chuck has worked extensively on issues involving the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) of 2003, the Single Drug Pricer (SDP) system, and the procurement of product-specific HCPCS codes. In 2006, he was the first person to be successful in obtaining an individual product HCPCS from CMS by making application in advance of FDA product approval, resulting in the availability of the specific code at time of product launch.

Before joining PAREXEL, Chuck held commercial positions of increasing responsibility at Cephalon Oncology, Cell Therapeutics, Genetics Institute (Wyeth Oncology), and Abbott Laboratories. He has a BS (Cum Laude) in Business Administration from Northeastern University, an MBA from Clark University, and a JD (Cum Laude) from Suffolk University Law School. He also attended the Massachusetts Senior Executive Program at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. Chuck is a former Captain in the United States Army Reserve and a veteran of Operation Desert Storm.  He is admitted to both the Massachusetts Bar and the United State Supreme Court Bar. Sharon has over 25 years of experience in healthcare communications, both in the clinical setting and the publication planning arena. In her current position as Medical Director, she is responsible for leading medical affairs activities, which include communications with clinicians, investigators, and patients. Along with the development and execution of scientific communication platforms and publication plans, she provides a hands-on perspective to data analysis and presentation, advisory boards, roundtable and investigator meetings, focus groups, market access communications, patient support programs, and education of team members globally. She is an active member of ISMPP, and has served for several years each on the workshop and program committees, including roles as abstract chair and roundtable chair for the annual meeting. Dr. Sykes is a senior physician with over 20 years Industry experience. Dr. Sykes has been instrumental in establishing new ways of working across GSK: ensuring company physicians and scientists engage with the external medical community to advance scientific understanding without any promotional intent. Dr Sykes is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) and was awarded Membership by Distinction of its Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine in 2005, and Fellowship in 2008. Jayme C. Trott

Stephen Valerio is the Therapeutic Area Director for Oncology Publications at AstraZeneca. A Certified Medical Publication Planner and a member of the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP), he has previously served as a member and co-chair of the ISMPP Education Committee and was a member of the Consultation Panel for the Good Publication Practice 2 Guidelines. He has over 15 years of experience in medical publications as a medical writer and working in strategic publications management. Stephen has worked on both national and international publication plans and supported multiple global launches. He has extensive experience in the areas of oncology, psychiatry, neurology, HIV, HCV and metabolism. Prior to joining AstraZeneca, Stephen worked in at Genentech/Roche in a variety of therapeutic areas and has also led the publication planning and scientific services groups at several medical education agencies. Stephen has a MS in Biology from Yale University and a BA with Honors in Biology from Drew University.

Hester van Lier, PhD, ISMPP CMPP™

Hester is an experienced team leader at Excerpta Medica, with ten years of experience in medical communications. She has supported international pharmaceutical companies in the development and execution of publication plans at the managerial and content level of products ranging from orphan disease status to blockbuster. Hester is actively involved in the implementation and adherence to Good Publication Practice and a Certified Medical Publication Professional. Since 2006, her expertise focusses on publication plans that integrate medical and Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR) data and insights. Her interests and professional energy go towards shaping interspecialty teams that develop and deliver impactful plans.

Al Weigel, M.Ed, ISMPP CMPP™

Al Weigel is President and COO for the International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP). Al joined ISMPP in November of 2013 with primary responsibility for implementing the strategic goals and vision of the Society, in addition to ensuring the Society meets established milestones for ongoing development, growth and success. Prior to joining ISMPP, Al led cross-therapeutic medical publication and scientific communication teams at sanofi-aventis, Boehringer-Ingelheim and Celgene Corporation.

Al earned his Masters of Education at the University of the Arizona and currently is a ISMPP Certified Medical Publication Professional™ (CMPP).

Richard Whilte, MS, PhD
Commercial Director, Oxford PharmaGenesis

Richard White is Commercial Director of Oxford PharmaGenesis, an independent HealthScience communications consultancy. He has more than 18 years of experience in medical communications, and has led launch publications plans for products across a broad range of therapy areas. Richard is a member of the International Society for Medical Publications Professionals (ISMPP), the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) and the Institute of Directors. He was a reviewer of the GPP2 and GPP3 guidelines, has personally authored 17 publications in peer-reviewed journals and 3 white papers on good publication practice, value demonstration and rare diseases in Pharmaceutical Marketing Europe, and is on the Editorial Board of Drugs in Context. Richard founded the Oxford PharmaGenesis Value Demonstration Practice to apply good publication practice expertise to HEOR, RWE and patient-reported outcomes (PRO) studies. He has run training workshops in these areas for multiple pharma companies, and has also delivered invited presentations and moderated roundtable discussions on publications and communications best practice in HEOR, RWE and PROs at the ISMPP (2015/2016) and TIPPA (2014/2015/2016) meetings. Richard co-presented an ISMPP-U webinar on RWE publications that was voted the most popular of 2015. Before joining Oxford PharmaGenesis, Richard gained his MA and PhD in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, UK. His PhD research won the 1998 Glaxo Wellcome Young Investigator’s Award, and he was awarded a Research Fellowship in Pharmacology at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. He has completed the Advanced Health Economic Modeling Programme at the University of Oxford, is an alumnus of the International Marketing Programme at INSEAD, and is currently an Honorary Research Associate at Oxford Brookes University, UK.

Susan Wieting, ISMPP CMPP™
Director, Scientific Publications, Global Medical Affairs, Shire International GmbH

For the past 4 years, Susan has been with Shire International, Switzerland and is currently a Director, Scientific Publications and Therapeutic Area Publication lead for Hereditary Angioedema and Lysosomal Storage Diseases.  Susan is originally from California and moved to Europe in 2002 to start her career in medical writing and, subsequently, as a publication planning professional.  She has 14 years of medical communication experience in academia, non-profit organizations and the pharmaceutical industry. As a Publication Lead, her areas of expertise include oncology (cervical cancer), vaccines, nephrology, neurology and rare diseases. Susan has a BSc in human physiology from San Francisco State University, a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from the EPFL, Geneva and is an ISMPP Certified Medical Publication Professional. She is a recent member of the ISMPP Medical Society and Education task force.

Sharon Willis, ISMPP CMPP™
Director, Credenitaling, ISMPP

Sharon Willis joined the International Society of Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) as Credentialing Director in July 2015. She is responsible for all aspects of the Certified Medical Publication Professional (CMPP) program, including certification exam development and delivery, recertification program and implementation, certification-related US, European, and other regional ISMPP meeting activities, and marketing of the Certification Program. She also manages the yearly ISMPP Certification Board elections with the CMPP Board Nominating Committee and works with Certification Board Directors in guiding related ISMPP activities with the Credentialing and Recertification Committees. Lastly, she manages the Certification Program annual budget in collaboration with the ISMPP Treasurer. Sharon has been an ISMPP CMPP™ since 2010. Prior to working at ISMPP, Sharon served in client services for more than 10 years, including working with Peloton Advantage, LLC, SCI Scientific Communications and Information and Helix Medical Communications LLC. She is experienced in all facets of global and domestic publication planning including strategic and tactical support. Sharon’s therapeutic area experience includes oncology, surgery, central nervous system disorders, infectious disease, and hemophilia.

Karen Woolley, PhD, ISMPP CMPP™

Karen has spent more than 25 years immersed in the medical publications sector within both academic and industry environments in North America and the Asia Pacific region. Karen serves on ISMPP’s Board of Trustees, chairs ISMPP’s Asia Pacific Advisory Committee, and co-authored the recently published Good Publication Practice 3 guidelines. She is an Honorary Fellow of AMWA, a Life Member of ARCS, and initiated the Global Alliance of Publication Professionals (www.gappteam.org). Karen is the Division Lead of ProScribe – part of the Envision Pharma Group, a technology-led, innovative, scientific communications company with offices in the US, UK, and Asia Pacific (www.EnvisionPharmaGroup.com). Karen and her Envision colleagues have a passion for research on the ethics and value of publication professionals. They have published their research in the world’s highest ranking medical journals (eg, JAMA, PLoS Medicine, Nature Medicine). Karen is invited regularly to speak at regional and international conferences. She provides a unique and engaging perspective on medical publication issues, based on her involvement in academic, hospital, publication sectors. Outside of work, Karen and her family enjoy the outdoors – glacial trekking in Alaska, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, zip lining in Canada, cycling in France, snowboarding in Japan and, of course, surfing in Australia!

Yvonne has over 25 years of experience in medical communications, primarily in content development, publication planning, and publication ethics. She is a coauthor of both the GPP2 and GPP3 guidelines, and has presented at conferences on medical writing and best practices in medical publications. Yvonne works as an independent consultant, providing medical writing, publications planning, and related services. She is the 2016–2017 Chair of the Board of Trustees of ISMPP, and served as Chair of the ISMPP Ethics Committee for the past 5 years. Yvonne is a member of ISMPP, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA).
